Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why have a University of Minnesota/Technical College Partnership?

Bringing together the specialized expertise of the technical colleges with a University of Minnesota Bachelor degree focused on manufacturing and business management, this partnership positions graduates to fill crucial leadership roles within today's fast-paced world of business and industry.

2. What Technical Colleges are involved?

In the metro area, UMC has partnerships with Hennepin Technical College, Anoka Technical College, Century College, Dakota-County Technical College and outside of the metro, Alexandria Technical College. These colleges have opened their campuses as sites for the delivery of courses, and are joining with the U in getting the word out to high school students, technical college students, and graduates.

3. Who is a good candidate for the BMM degree?

This degree is ideal working adults in the manufacturing or production operations or for someone just entering the workforce who wants to jumpstart their career. Technical college graduates who wish to further their qualifications to a bachelor's degree level before entering the workplace will find UMC to be a transfer friendly institution that recognizes their previous college credits. For people already in the workplace, UMC recognizes specialized training and life experience.

4. Where and when are classes held?

Check out our website for fall, spring and summer course offerings. Courses will be staggered across our five participating technical college campuses so that the students interested in full time coursework can access multiple campuses. Timing of course offerings will be geared to student needs. Hence, most fall and spring course offerings will be three-hour night classes once per week. For those students who do not wish to attend class physically in the classroom, have the option of completing the entire degree online!

5. How much does it cost? Can I get financial aid?

Students taking 15 or more credits will pay $3,224. Students taking 12 credits or fewer will pay $248 per credit. For any online courses, a separate $15 fee for each online credit will also be charged. For example: if you take four 3-credit classes on campus and one 3-credit online class, you will be charged the flat rate of $3,224 for tuition plus $45 for online credit fees. Or if you enroll in two 3-credit class and one 3-credit online class, you will be charged $2,232 in tuition (9 credits) plus an additional $45 for online credit fees.

6. How many of my credits will transfer?

We are very transfer friendly. If you have a diploma or applied associates degree from any technical college or university that is accredited, we will accept the credits. 40 of the 120 semester credits in this University of Minnesota bachelor's program must be upper division level, and 30 must be taken from UMC. Additional credits earned at postsecondary institutions may transfer as well. For a pre-evaluation of transferring credits with an unofficial transcript, contact Jennifer Severinson at 218-281-8681 or seve0169@umn.edu.

7. Where do I send my transcripts?

At the time of application, send your official transcripts to the UMC address on the application's last page. Request transcripts from each institution where you have credits you would like evaluated for potential transfer. This is required, even if you have previously had these credits accepted into another academic institution such as your current technical college.

8. If I'm sure I know the subject matter through experience, but have never taken the courses, do I have to re-do the work?

No. Once admitted, you may complete a course challenge examination for a minimal cost per course. This is done at the beginning of any semester in which the course is offered. You receive the syllabus and text information and have two weeks to prepare. If you pass the exam, you will be awarded University credits for the course. This option is proceeded by an evaluation of your portfolio to ensure that you have the skills and knowledge to be successful in more rigorous work that will follow.

9. Is there any other way to get credit through work experience?

UMC does have a system for assessing life experience for college credit. It is an elaborate process that ensures our students receive every possible credit while maintaining academic standards.

10. What credit value can I get for continuing education courses that I have attended?

Most of this kind of coursework does not have any assessment associated with it. UMC generally limits the number of credits awarded for these courses to six semester credit hours.

11. How do I apply?

You may choose to co-enroll as a technical college student and a University of Minnesota student. This will allow you the very best advising and up-to-date information on progress delivery schedules and options.
